As many as 10 million US households do not have checking accounts, most of them because they can’t afford traditional bank checking accounts. Therefore Walmart will fill in the gap by offering checking accounts which do not demand any minimum balance and do not charge for overdrafts or bounced checks. If the customer can place a direct deposit of at least $500 each month in his account he will then have the $8.95 monthly fee waived.
Walmart spokeswoman Molly Blakeman said that when Walmart heard from their customers that “traditional banking fees are just too high,” Walmart saw an opportunity to help them. “We think that our customers have a need there and we’re looking to help them fill that.”
The checking accounts should come available at the end of October.
