March 17 is the day Americans all over the country celebrate Irish American heritage. The day, known as St. Patrick’s Day, is commemorated with parades: the two largest in Boston and New York, and a lot of partying. Green beer is purchased by the pint, and other spending, to the tune of about $37 per person, also contributes to the celebratory atmosphere of the day.
According to Kathiy Grannis of the National Retail Federation, about 80 percent of Americans will just wear something green to honor their Irish friends. But across the country the other 20 percent is spending, to the tune of $4.6 billion. The money is spent mostly in restaurants and bars.
